Passed the NCLEX but still being asked for a license, a credential report, or VisaScreen? These requirements serve different purposes. Completing one does not automatically complete the others.

Knowing what each item does can help you avoid ordering the wrong service or sending documents to the wrong place.

NCLEX: the licensing examination

The NCLEX is an examination used in the nursing licensure process. Passing it satisfies the examination requirement, but the nursing board must also confirm that you meet its other requirements before issuing a license.

If you have passed but your license has not been issued, describe your status accurately. “NCLEX passed” and “active U.S. nursing license” are not interchangeable.

State nursing license: permission to practice

A nursing license is issued by a state board of nursing or the relevant nursing regulator. Requirements for nurses educated abroad vary by jurisdiction and can include education review, English proficiency, background checks, and other documentation.

If you obtained a license through one state but will work in another, check what authorization you need for the destination state. Do not assume your existing license automatically covers the new location.

Use the NCSBN Nurse Licensure Guidance tool to find the relevant board and requirements.

Credential evaluation: a review of your education

A credential evaluation helps the receiving organization assess your nursing education. Depending on the service, it may also include verification of professional licenses.

The exact report matters. Before paying, confirm which provider and report your nursing board accepts, who must send the records, and where the finished report should go.

“Which exact service do I need, and does my school need to send the transcript directly?”

A diploma uploaded by you may not replace records that must come directly from your school or licensing authority.

VisaScreen: certification for immigration purposes

VisaScreen, offered by TruMerit, is a health care worker screening service used for certain U.S. immigration requirements. It reviews education, professional licenses, English proficiency where required, and nursing examination evidence.

A VisaScreen certificate is not a nursing license, a visa, or permission to start work. Confirm the applicable certification and timing with the team handling your immigration case.

The TruMerit VisaScreen page explains the service and required documents.

Keep a separate status for each item

Track your exam result, state license, credential report, and immigration certification separately. For each one, record the application number, missing documents, recipient, and any expiration date.

When someone says your “credentials are complete,” ask which requirement they mean. That small clarification can prevent a lot of confusion later.
