Kansas City’s skyline is in Missouri, but your nursing job may be across the state line in Kansas. The wider metropolitan area includes both, with different neighborhoods and daily routines depending on where you work.

Before choosing a home, start with your hospital address, your shift, and how you will get to work.

Understand the two sides of Kansas City

Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, are separate cities within the same metropolitan area. The downtown skyline and Union Station shown in this article’s thumbnail are in Missouri.

For nurses considering AdventHealth through DaRi, Shawnee Mission is in Merriam, South Overland Park is in Overland Park, and Lenexa City Center is in Lenexa. These campuses are in Kansas. AdventHealth Ottawa is farther from the main urban area and needs its own housing search.

A “Kansas City” address does not automatically mean a convenient commute. Search using the exact campus where you will work.

Choose a location around your shift

A neighborhood that looks convenient on a map may work differently at 6 a.m. or after a night shift. Compare travel times for both the journey to work and the trip home, including weekends.

Johnson County offers bus and microtransit services, but routes, service areas, and operating hours matter. Microtransit provides shared rides within a defined area; it is not an unrestricted taxi service.

Check your proposed journey using the Johnson County transit information. If services do not match your shift, budget for another reliable way to travel.

Look beyond the advertised rent

Ask what the monthly price includes. Utilities, internet, parking, deposits, and other charges can change the total.

Before signing a lease, check:

  • How you will reach groceries and other everyday services
  • Whether laundry is available in the apartment or building
  • Whether the bedroom is quiet and dark enough for daytime sleep
  • The distance to the hospital’s staff entrance or parking area

If you are comparing homes in Kansas and Missouri, tell the hospital which state you intend to live in and confirm any implications for your nursing license and payroll arrangements.

Make room for life outside work

You can explore Missouri’s downtown area without making it your daily commute. On the Kansas side, Downtown Overland Park has local shops and places to eat, with Thompson Park nearby.

Shawnee Mission Park offers trails, picnic areas, and a lake for time outdoors. The Overland Park events calendar is also useful for finding markets, community events, and seasonal activities.

Think about what you would actually use on a day off: a nearby walking route, a gym, a grocery store, or somewhere to meet friends. Those details can matter more than a recognizable city address.

Confirm your campus before committing

If your arrival arrangements allow it, use temporary accommodation to test the commute and visit potential neighborhoods before choosing a permanent home.

Start with the AdventHealth Kansas City campus information on DaRi, then narrow your search around the confirmed work location.
