Beyond the Hospital: Life on Florida’s Space Coast
Picture life near Health First: downtown cafés in Melbourne, waterside parks in Palm Bay, outdoor shopping in Viera, and beach days in Cocoa Beach.
A coffee downtown, a paddle through a shaded creek, or an evening watching a rocket rise over the ocean: these are some of the reasons to look beyond the job description when considering Health First.
Florida’s Space Coast includes several distinct communities. Melbourne brings downtown dining and local shops; Palm Bay offers waterside parks and nature trails; Viera combines outdoor shopping with everyday conveniences. Cocoa Beach adds the Atlantic to the picture. Here is what life around these places can look like.

Melbourne and West Melbourne: coffee, local shops, and an evening downtown

If you enjoy having somewhere to wander, start with Historic Downtown Melbourne. Around New Haven Avenue, you can browse independent shops, stop for coffee, and choose a restaurant for dinner with new colleagues. Murals, live music, and local events give you reasons to return after the first visit.
Holmes Regional Medical Center is in Melbourne. Nearby West Melbourne is another place to include in your housing search, but it is a separate city. Compare each address with your hospital and the places you would use regularly. Melbourne Beach is also a separate community, across the water; a Melbourne address does not automatically mean living by the ocean.
Palm Bay: waterside walks and a kayak on your day off

Palm Bay’s appeal is easy to see at Castaways Point Park: palms beside the lagoon, places to sit by the water, and space for a picnic. This is a quieter kind of waterfront outing than an Atlantic surf beach.
For a more active day, Turkey Creek Sanctuary has a 1.85-mile boardwalk through native habitats, with opportunities to explore the creek by kayak or canoe. It gives you something specific to look forward to beyond errands and unpacking.
Palm Bay Hospital is the local Health First campus. When comparing homes, check the route to the hospital on Malabar Road; Palm Bay covers more ground than one neighborhood.
Viera: outdoor shopping, dinner, and an easy place to meet friends

The Avenue Viera brings shops, restaurants, a cinema, and landscaped gathering spaces together outdoors. You can meet someone for lunch, browse a few stores, or make dinner and a movie your evening plan without arranging a full day trip.
For nurses considering Viera Hospital, this is a useful area to explore alongside nearby housing. Visit the places that would shape your routine: groceries, a gym, your preferred restaurants, and the drive to work. A neighborhood becomes easier to picture when you can imagine an ordinary Tuesday there.
Cocoa Beach: surf lessons, ocean air, and something unusual in the sky

Cocoa Beach is where a day off can mean a surf lesson, a walk along the shore, and lunch near the pier. Downtown adds coffee shops, murals, and restaurants to explore. You can enjoy these places while living elsewhere in the region, too; an oceanfront lease is not a requirement for a beach day.
Then there are the launches. Watching a rocket climb above the coast is one of the experiences that makes this place unmistakably the Space Coast. Check the official launch calendar and viewing information before heading out, because schedules change.
If your role is at Cape Canaveral Hospital, confirm the campus for your start date. Health First plans to open its replacement hospital on Merritt Island in 2027, which matters when comparing places to live.
Choose the home that makes this lifestyle work for you
Start with your confirmed hospital, then compare the journey at your shift hours, including any causeway crossings. Put rent, utilities, transportation, and insurance into the same monthly budget. Ask about air conditioning, storm preparations, and your hospital’s severe-weather staffing arrangements before settling on a home.
Moving overseas involves more than finding a position. Having a favorite café, somewhere to walk, and people to meet on your days off can help a new place feel familiar. To connect these communities with your hospital options, explore Health First on DaRi.
